How to Make a Smurf Costume
Smurfs are small characters who are characterized by their blue colored skin, created by the Belgian cartoonist Peyo in 1958. Years later, these little people made the leap to the screen and became the protagonists of their own series. A Smurf costume can be ideal for many occasions as it is very easy to make yourself at home. In this OneHowTo article we explain how to make a Smurf costume.
Steps to follow:
The first thing you need to make a Smurf costume is a long sleeved blue t-shirt and some white trousers or thick tights which will be the body and clothes for this little character. If you want to get creative, consider using fabric paint to add some fun blue patterns to the shirt, which can make your costume stand out even more.
For your hands, you can also get some blue gloves. On your feet, we recommend wearing some white trainers or any other type of shoes with this color. To add an authentic touch, you might even consider painting the trainers with blue accents, creating a unique look that matches the Smurf theme.
What cannot be missed from your Smurf costume is the hat that is so typical of these little characters. You can make it yourself with white foam, also known as foamy, which is a kind of foam covered with fabric that is widely used for making costumes (see picture). To ensure the hat stays in place, you might want to sew in an elastic band or use a fabric glue for extra support.
With what you've just read, you'll have your Smurf costume, but you need to supplement it with some of the characteristic features of different Smurfs:
- Brainy Smurf: black and round glasses. Consider using lightweight plastic to make them comfortable.
- Greedy Smurf: always has food in his hand and is eating. Think about creating fake food props out of foam or lightweight materials.
- Hefty Smurf: he has a tattoo of a red heart on each arm and lifts weights. Temporary tattoos or fabric markers work well here.
- Sleepy Smurf: he carries a pillow and is always yawning. A small, soft pillow can double as a prop and a comfort item.
- Painter Smurf: with a brush and palette. You could use a real brush and create a palette with cardboard painted to look like it has colorful paints.
- Poet Smurf: he carries a pen and paper everywhere. To add depth, you could write some classic Smurf quotes on the paper.
These are just some of the Smurfs in the village. Next, we'll show you some of the most popular Smurf costumes too.
It is also worth noting that in the village Papa Smurf is responsible for making sure the village works properly. For this costume, you should wear red trousers and shoes instead of white ones and make a red cap as well. You should also wear a white beard to complete your look. A good tip is to use cotton or faux fur for the beard, which can be easily attached with an elastic strap or adhesive.
Also among the Smurfs, we can also find Smurfette, who is the girl of the group. So, someone can also dress up as the girl Smurf, for which you need a white dress and blue stockings or leggings, which you'll use instead of the blue shirt. To enhance the costume, a blonde wig can be added to mimic Smurfette's iconic hair. This adds another layer of authenticity to the outfit.
Finally, another possible costume is the villain of the film: Gargamel is the wizard who, along with his cat Azrael, chases the little Smurfs to get rid of them. To dress up as Gargamel, you need a black robe and red shoes. Adding a plush cat toy as Azrael can be a fun accessory and complete the ensemble. Additionally, you might use makeup to create Gargamel's distinctive facial features, enhancing the overall look.
