Skirt

The skirt of a cheerleader costume is usually pleated. This is because a pleated skirt allows maximum movement and flexibility which is very important for cheerleading. But nowadays straight cut skirts are also becoming very popular.

Pleated skirts are quite difficult to make if you want to make one from scratch. So, you can opt for a simple pleated skirt that you already own. If you don’t have one then you can look for it in a store which sells school uniforms. If you are buying a straight cut skirt, opt for one which has a side slit. The side slit will help in the movement.

Top

Cheerleader tops can be of various types. It can be a tight sweater, a tank top or a simple t-shirt. Color coordinate your top with the skirt so that the whole outfit matches beautifully. You don’t need to have the same colored top as the skirt always. Choosing carefully and pairing contrasting colors in the top and skirts can also make the costume look beautiful.

If you have brought a simple top then add some ribbons to it or some embellishment to make it more cheery.

Pom Poms

Finally the last part which completes the cheerleader costume is the pom poms. To make the pom poms choose materials which are fluffy such as plastic or the vinyl tablecloth. You can have pom poms in single color or in two colors.

First buy vinyl tablecloth or some plastics of two colors. Fold the tablecloth or plastics to form a rectangle. Fold the rectangle in half. Then take a scissor and start cutting strips along the short folded edge leaving about half an inch in the end. Then unfold the rectangle and you will see that both sides are cut into strips leaving about an inch strip in the middle. Now take a duct tape and place it on a surface with the sticky side up. Place the middle 1 inch uncut part of rectangle on the duct tape. Fold up the duct tape and secure it properly. Then fluff the tassels by moving the strips a bit in all directions. Your pom poms ready!

Hair and makeup

Now you have all of your costume ready, you'll only need to do your face. Create a top bun or a ponytail for the whole cheerleader look. Add a ribbon to your ponytail for an even more authentic look.

Keep in mind that many cheerleaders are adolescent, therefore you don't need to go over the top with makeup. You face should look angelical and naive, which is why we advise you to go for a natural makeup look.
