You'll need:
- 2 yards of red felt
- Measuring tape
- Red thread
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Pig accessories (ears, nose and tail)
- Pink tight
Steps to follow:
Using the red felt we will at first create Peppa Pig’s red dress.
Measure your child and determine the length of the dress. Spread the felt on a plain surface and then cut the felt lengthwise. Make sure that you cut double the length recorded by you because you need to make both the front and back of the dress.
For example, if the measurement of your child is 26” then you need to cut 52” out of the 2-yard red felt. This method ensures the dress will have the right fit and allow for easy movement, making it comfortable for the child to wear for extended periods.
Fold the felt in half. Now take out your child’s tank top and keep it on the felt. The folded felt will be the place where the neck and arm region of the tank top should be placed.
Then trace the armpit and the neck area. This step is crucial for ensuring that the dress has the correct proportions and that the armholes are comfortable. Taking the time to trace carefully will make the final product look more polished and professional.
In the armpit area make another line on the outside and beside the trace with a half-inch gap between both lines. Take a scissor and cut along the line drawn outside. Using the scissor also cut off the neck hole. This additional space allows for seam allowance, ensuring that the dress does not feel too tight under the arms.
Now cut the dress lengthwise so that it is in the form of an A-line dress. Then sew down each side of this A-line dress. Start sewing from the armpit and go down to the bottom of the dress. When one side is done, repeat the same on the other side. An A-line dress is ideal because it offers a charming silhouette that is both playful and elegant.
If you are not a fan of sewing then you can use hot glue to glue both sides of the felt. This no-sew option can save time and is effective if you're in a hurry.
Once the red dress is done, attach the pig tail at the backside of the dress. If you haven't got one you can easily make your own at home. Use around 6 12'' pipe cleaners and twist them together. Then, cover with two identical pieces of pink fabric, one on each side, and sew them together. The tail adds an authentic touch to the costume and is a fun, creative way to engage your child in the crafting process.
Ask your little one to wear the pink slacks and the pink jumper/t-shirt. Then put on the red felt dress. The next thing you must do is put on the piggy hairband for Peppa Pig's ears and attach the pig nose on her ear using the elastic band. These accessories are essential for completing the look, making it instantly recognizable and delightful for any Peppa Pig fan.
Let her wear black, white, or pink ballerina shoes. If it's cold, we advise you to also use a pair of pink tights that match the jumper to match Peppa Pig's leg color. The tights not only provide warmth but also ensure that the costume is consistent from head to toe.
For the final touch let's take a look at the makeup. Use a peachy-pink foundation for a more natural-looking face or use face paints to cover the face in pink. Apply some pink blush to her cheeks in two big blotches, as Peppa's cheeks are bright red. Apply a touch of lipstick if you want, though it's not needed. A touch of pink eyeshadow is also recommended if you haven't painted your face pink. Makeup enhances the costume's authenticity and is a fun way to engage your child in the transformation process.
Alternatively, you can also make a Peppa Pig mask out of cardboard. This way, you won't have to use a pig nose or ears. The drawing is pretty simple so you shouldn't have much problem drawing the silhouette, eyes, mouth, and nose. This option is perfect for those who prefer not to use face paint or makeup.
Your daughter or you will be ready to enjoy the day dressed as the beloved Peppa Pig.
