How to Make a Katana Costume from Suicide Squad
Katana or Tatsu Yamashiro is a fierce, relentless and murderous Japanese super-heroine created by DC comics. Trained by the samurai Tadashi, Katana becomes a martial arts master who employs her mystical Soultaker sword to combat the evil. Katana is one of the main characters in the movie Suicide Squad working as Rick Flag’s bodyguard and staging along with El Diablo, Deadshot, Joker, Harley Quinn and other superheroes.
In this OneHowTo article we detail how to make a Katana Costume from Suicide Squad.
You'll need:
- A pair of black boots
- A pair of black pants
- A white tank top (full length or mid-waist length)
- A three-quarter length black jacket
- An old white T-shirt and an old red T-shirt or white and red fabric
- Gold and red paint or gold and red marker pens
- A white mask
- A mid-length black wig (optional)
- A costume sword
- Scissors, glue and a paint brush
Steps to follow:
In order to make a Katana costume from Suicide Squad we will start with the basic clothing items.
You will need:
- A pair of black boots
- A pair of black pants
- A white tank top (full length or mid-waist length)
- A three-quarter length black jacket
We recommend that you use an old black jacket or you buy a new one for this DIY as we will be adding some decorative elements to the jacket.
Once you have the basic items we will work on the add-on pieces of clothing. You will notice that Katana wears a red Karate belt around her waist. You can buy a wide red piece of fabric and secure it around your waist or use a red belt.
She also has a piece of red fabric tied together across her back in the shape of a bow. You may also use a small red backpack, which can also be used to store your belongings.
On her right arm she wears a white armband that often shows a red circle similarly to the one drawn on her mask. You can use a piece of white fabric and paint a red circle on it or just simply cut out a white strip from an old white T-shirt.
With regards to the decorative elements you may have noticed there are several drawings on her jacket. For this part of the DIY we recommend that you buy a gold thick sharpie pen or some gold paint for use on garments to plaster these decorative elements on the jacket.
Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of this character is Katana’s white mask. You can always use white paint over your face but for a better result we suggest that you buy a plain white mask. You can find these full face length or half-face length as the one she sports.
Cut the mask if needed. Then cut out the eye holes gently in the shape of elongated teardrops. Remember, that she is a Japanese character and thus you want to shape the eye holes this way. Don’t worry if you cut out too much. Katana wears black eye makeup that completely covers the eye holes. Finally paint a red circle on the center of the forehead.
Katana has black hair so you may want to buy a black mid-length wig if you have blond hair.
Last but not least, we couldn’t forget about Katana’s Soultaker sword. You may find a costume ninja sword in any party store or through some of the most popular online shopping websites.
