Top 5 New Year's Eve Movies to Watch at Home Instead of Going Out
New Year's Eve for some is not just an excuse for a party; it is a chance to celebrate what has passed and look forward to what will come in a spirit of optimism, to take the opportunity to embrace life and display this feeling in revelry. For others it is a waste of time and a cynical reminder that all the miniature pretzels and communal countdowns in the world aren't going to stop the next year being as disappointing as all the others. Perhaps the latter group will find some solace in this oneHOWTO list of Top 5 New Year's Eve Movies to Watch at Home Instead of Going Out, some of which start out cynical like the viewer, but end up showing that a little coming together can help even the hardest of hearts feel a little holiday cheer.
The Poseidon Adventure
Perhaps reassuring the cynical rather than lifting their spirits, this New Year's Eve movie shows a NYE party which is a disaster much worse than the usual over drinking or lack of a midnight kiss. The S.S. Poseidon is a ship bound for Greece which slowly starts to sink after it capsizes during a New Year's eve party due to its careless owner demanding it be kept at a dangerous speed. The survivors of the crash are stuck in a mouse trap like labyrinth and need to escape their doom. Never sure whether or not your favorite character is going to make it, this is a thrill ride which is likely to keep you up even later than your noisy neighbors.
Although a narrative set during interlinking New Year's Eve parties in 1981, this couldn't be a more 90's affair. It marks a particularly fleeting period in movie history which, like many New Year's Eve parties, is either a golden era or a permanent black stain on the calendar. It is a period when Dave Chappelle was underappreciated, Courtney Love thought she could act, Ben Affleck hadn't made Pearl Harbor and Paul Rudd was as young as he looked. Some or all of these factor's might have led to it having such poor reviews, but if you are already in a low mood, this New Year's Eve movie will show you that at least your night isn't being spent with all these vacuous people.
The Godfather Part II
Family ties can be a little frayed over the holidays, but the New Year's Eve revelations which break open this crime drama come Shakespearean tragedy are pretty raw to say the least. We won't give you any spoilers if you haven't seen it already, although you break our hearts if you haven't, but you won't be able to stop watching the story unfold, so have all your party snacks and drinks at hand to save you pausing it every 15 minutes and causing your own family rivalries to break open.
When Harry Met Sally...
A little more levity than some of the dramatic fare offered so far, this New Year's Eve movie nonetheless tugs at our heart strings especially if they have been broken sometime in the previous 12 months. Saved from being schmaltzy by an incredibly witty script by Nora Ephron and charming performances from Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, there are enough laughs in these 96 minutes to sustain even the most miserable couch potato on New Year's Eve. The emotional climax of the movie happens on New Year's Eve and, without giving anything away, it directly breaks the cynicism of both the characters and the viewer. One to perk you up if you're not in the spirit and want to get there.
In Search of a Midnight Kiss
Like 200 Cigarettes, this New Year's Eve movie is of its time, except this time is the mid-2000s and the lonely protagonists have the added complication (or benefit?) of new technology to add to their social dysfunction. Like most of the movies in our list, modern middle class problems abound, but what saves this move from being devoid of any real value is the right balance of charm and humor, intelligence and heart. Despite its low budget, it also has style. Shot in black and white, the world in which it takes place is a sunny Los Angeles rather than a snowy winterscape common to many New Year's Eve movies. Enough to satisfy the misanthropes and the naive, it's a reminder that New Year's Eve is like any other day of the year - bittersweet.
