The Best Non Alcoholic Christmas Drinks

For many, Christmas is a time to overindulge. This means food, presents, company and, for some, drinking a little more than they like. Others have reasons they don't want to drink alcoholic beverages at Christmas time. This can be a lifestyle choice or simply a practical consideration when it comes to filling a packed holiday schedule. Non-alcoholic cocktails, often known as mocktails, are a delicious alternative. Just because you are not drinking alcohol, doesn't mean you can't have delectable festive drinks which will make you feel warm and fuzzy despite the lack of booze. oneHOWTO has the best non-alcoholic Christmas drinks so you can have lots of festive fun without the Boxing Day sore head.

A Christmas cherry bomb

The first non alcoholic Christmas drink we'd like to show you is the Cherry Bomb, as it's a crowd pleaser and is very easy to make. Various versions of alcoholic cherry bombs exist containing vodka, cachaça or similar clear spirits. Many vodka based cocktails can be made minus the vodka (and other alcohol) as they often derive their flavor from other ingredients. For this drink, you will need the following:

  • 1 Cup of Grenadine
  • 1 liter of citrus soda
  • 20 Maraschino Cherries

Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a medium sauce pan. Add the grenadine and stir. Pour this mixture into ice cube trays. Freeze until solid or about 2 or 3 hours. Fill glasses with the ice cubes and add the citrus soda. You can garnish with a cherry for the full festive touch if you like.

Non-alcoholic kir royale

For those who like a glass of something sparkly on Christmas morning, but don't want to drink that early, these non-alcoholic kir royales are great. They use sparkling grape juice instead of Prosecco or Champagne to make sure you still feel classy at Christmas.

  • 1 tsp blackcurrant syrup
  • 1 glass sparkling white grape juice

Put the teaspoon of syrup in the bottom of a Champagne flute and carefully pour the grape juice down the side of the glass. This will stop the syrup and juice mixing and give it the proper kir royale look.

Non-alcoholic dark and stormy

A dark and stormy is a rum based cocktail which is just at home on a Carribean island as it is in a warm pub on a cold winter's night (when it is dark and stormy). It is served over ice, but the ginger beer makes it the kind of spicy drink perfect for Christmas time. You need a strong apple juice to give it the flavor it needs, but the teaspoon of molasses put the dark in this dark and stormy. If you don't have molasses, muscovado sugar will do. Here's the ingredients:

  • 2 oz cloudy apple juice
  • 3 oz ginger beer
  • 1 tsp molasses
  • 2 lime wedges

Mix the teaspoon of molasses in the apple juice until it turn s dark brown. Pour in a highball glass over ice and top up carefully with the ginger beer, so as they don't mix. Squeeze in a wedge of lime and use the other for a garnish.

Apple ginger sparkle

This is a very tasty non alcoholic drink, especially at Christmas time. Here is what you need for it:

  • 1/4 cup of Ginger syrup
  • 4 1/2 cups of sparkling apple cider
  • 6 Cinnamon sticks
  • 6 pieces of crystallized ginger

Here's what to do:

Place about 2 tablespoons of ginger syrup in each glass. Fill with ice cubes and pour in the apple cider. Garnish with the cinnamon sticks and fresh ginger.

Non-alcoholic mulled wine

Mulled wine is Christmas in a cup. It has the spicy notes which we have come to associate with festive fun (apparently because historically spices were so expensive we had to keep them for special occasions like Christmas) as well as the warmth we need during winter holidays. This one uses non-alcoholic wine, but has all the same goodness as regular mulled wine.

  • 1 bottle of non-alcoholic wine
  • 2 oz brown sugar
  • 1 orange
  • 1 tbsp cloves
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 1 bay leaf

Put the non-alcoholic wine in a saucepan and turn the heat on low. You don't want to boil the wine, but simply heat it. Cut the orange in halve and stud the rinds with the cloves. Put into the saucepan with the cinnamon, nutmeg and bay leaf. Put in the sugar and stir until it dissolves into the wine. Let it mull for about 10 minutes so the spices infuse. Non-alcoholic wine doesn't always taste as good as its boozy counterpart, so mulling it with these spices can be a great way to enjoy it.

Christmas pomegranate soda

Whether you are having a family Christmas or operating a big Christmas party, this is one of the best non-alcoholic Christmas drinks that all of your guests will love. Here is what you need:

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of pomegranate juice
  • a liter of club soda
  • cherries for garnish

In a sauce pan, combine the sugar and juice. Bring this to a boil until the sugar is completely melted. Cook for another minute on low and there should be a syrupy mixture in your pan now. Let it cool. Fill glasses with ice and put 2 tablespoons of the mixture in each glass. Top with club soda and garnish with a cherry. Maraschino cherries are great because they are sweet already and will give it that little cherry kick it might need.

Non-alcoholic eggnog

While many of our non-alcoholic Christmas drinks and cocktails here have Christmas written all over them, eggnog is one of the most traditional. This one takes a little more effort than some others, but it's worth it for the holiday memories it evokes.

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 dash white vinegar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch grated nutmeg
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon

Separate the eggs and beat the yolks with the sugar until they are a pale cream color. Pour in the milk, stirring as you do. Add the nutmeg, salt and cinnamon. Whisk again until well combined.

Beat the egg whites with the splash of vinegar until steak peaks form. Fold the egg whites into the egg yolks until well combined, bursting as little bubbles as possible. Chill, pour into glasses and serve.

Peanut butter hot chcocolate

Hot chocolate is a winter warmer, but this peanut butter hot chocolate is the kind of nutty decadence Christmas calls for. Easy to make and great for an end of Christmas Day nightcap.

  • 3 tbsp peanut butter
  • 1 splash whole milk
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder (proper baking cocoa)
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 cup whole milk

Put the peanut butter in a saucepan and turn the heat to low. Pour in the splash of milk and whisky until melted. Add the brown sugar and cocoa powder and keep whisking on a low heat until it combines. Don't ignore the chocolate mix lest it burns on the bottom of the pan. Pour the cup of milk into the pan and whisky well. When the milk simmers and the mixture is well combine, it is done. Careful not to overboil it.

Feel free to add some marshmallows, whipped cream or whatever Christmas treats you want!
