How to Throw a 70s Themed Party

A themed party for adults is a great excuse to meet up with friends and have a good time dressing up and dancing to good music. If you can't think of any new party themes, or if the parties you throw are starting to get a bit samey-samey, how about choosing a classic?

In this oneHOWTO article we'll help you relive one of the most emblematic and psychedelic decades of all times. If you want to find out how to throw a 70s themed party, keep on reading!

Steps to follow:
1

One of the most important aspects of any themed party is your outfit. Fashions, trends and fads are what shapes a decade in our memories, so if you want to be thrown back to the seventies you'll have to build a good 70s-style outfit.

You can dig out some old clothes you might have in your wardrobe - or your parents' - or go to a second-hand shop to find authentic vintage clothes from the seventies. In fact, you could even find the right clothes at any high-street shop, given that nowadays vintage and retro style is very much in vogue.

If you're going for the early 1970s hippie style, you probably already know what to wear: flared trousers, long skirts, headbands, wigs, oversized sunglasses or wide-necked shirts. Later in the decade came more glamorous styles, from preppy-looking miniskirts or go-go boots to glam rock and its platforms and band t-shirts or disco with its glitter, flamboyant ruffles and halter tops. Punk also began in the late seventies, so that's also a good choice for a themed party if bell bottoms are not your thing.

Music should be played continuously because, along with the fancy dress clothing, it's what will distinguish the party. Decide which vibe to go for. For a seventies rock vibe, you could play songs from bands and artists such as The Doors, Patti Smith, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd, AC/DC or The Who, or folkier sounds like those of Fleetwood Mac or Emmylou Harris.

If you rather focus on the funky and disco era of the late seventies, we recommend playing bands like the Bee Gees, Sly & the Family Stone, the Jackson 5, the Supremes or Donna Summer. Needless to say, if disco is central to your party, don't forget to hang a disco ball. Small sized disco balls are widely available in shops.

The hippie movement paid close attention to Asia during the late sixties and early seventies, especially in the culture of India, as clearly demonstrated by bands such as the Beatles. Why not pay tribute to the spiritual journey that many experienced during those years?

For decoration, consider choosing crafts from India such as pillows, rugs, and patterned decorative items made from natural fibers or wood.

You can also take a look at the movies of the time. Decorate the walls with posters of popular films or actors that were popular during this decade. Here is a list of the most well-known films from the seventies: The Godfather, Grease, The Exorcist, Star Wars, A Clockwork Orange, Alien, Jaws, Rocky and The Sting. Your guests will definitely have seen some, if not all, of these.

Finally, don't forget to decorate the party with iconic symbols that marked this era. How about covering the walls, shelves and tables with covers of famous newspapers of the time, the peace symbol, flowers, psychedelic images, or the smiley symbol?
