How many times did you exit the store having successfully checked off your long list of gifts to buy; but forgot the wrapping paper? Many wrapping papers are just boring, plain and ugly and not worth your money. You can switch things up this year by creating your own wrapping paper. If trying to come up with the perfect gift for your girlfriend or boyfriend isn't hard enough, making sure that it is beautifully wrapped may be even more important. Speaking of first impressions, a customized wrapping paper will immediately upgrade your gift.

In this OneHowTo article we explain how to make customized wrapping paper.

Steps to follow:

There are many techniques that you can use to make your own wrapping paper. For this article we will be sharing four techniques that are simple, easy and affordable.

For this first wrapping paper technique, you will need:

  • Craft paper or plain baking paper
  • Paint (color of your choice)
  • Fine paintbrush
  • Round eraser

The key element is to use your eraser to stamp small designs on your paper. For instance, you can use the eraser top of a pencil, then dip it in the paint and finally create a stamp design on your paper. Some creative people have used root vegetables as their stamps. Using a knife, you can carve a small design on the vegetable and then dip in in the paint as if it where a stamp. Use your paintbrush to add decorative elements.

If you are not a crafty person but still like the previous idea, you may want to hear about this second technique.

The secret is using the Internet and some imagination. Say you are giving a present to someone that loves dogs, you can go make a quick search engine browse to find a small picture of a dog that you think matches this person’s love for animals.

Then open a word processing document, set the size to A5 (large size) and copy and paste this icon as many times as you want across the paper. Once you are ready send it to your nearest printing store. Once printed you have your customized wrapping paper for a dog lover.

The next technique is to add a unique touch by upgrading the tape you use.

You will need:

  • Washi tape or colorful thin tape
  • Plain paper or craft paper
  • Ruler
  • Marker

Since the tape will already add some color and spice to your DIY, it is best that you use plain brown, white or black craft paper.

The first step is to simply wrap your gifts with craft paper and using your new tape. This will be give you a new canvas so that you can start adding the details. Cut some pieces of washi tape and start playing around with some angles and shapes. Use a ruler and marker to help you. You can go the minimalist route and just add a few strips or maybe go all in by covering it completely in tape.

Last but not least, another way to get into the Christmas spirit is to add some natural props to your wrapping paper. Use pine cones, holly, Christmas tree branches...

You will need:

  • Craft paper
  • String
  • Pine cone
  • Fir tree branch
  • Small bauble

There are so many variations to this wrapping paper technique, as you can add as many Christmasy objects as you can imagine. First, wrap the present in craft paper, add a wrapping string both ways and tie them to create a bow. Now is the time where you can add your props. Tie the small bauble from one of the ends of the string, stick the fir tree branch strategically under the string with a bit of blue and top it up by sticking a pine cone too.

Your Christmas wrapping has never been so three dimensional!

Knowing that you created customized wrapping paper will definitely surprise the people you are offering presents to. However, remember that most people will tear up the paper in just a few seconds and only a few will want to keep the wrapping. Therefore, make sure that you picked a truly original gift this year.
