Finally, a Star Wars movie has introduced a female central character. She is described as being brave, a tough survivor, headstrong and loyal to her friends. If you are attracted to Rey’s qualities you can choose to dress like her in the next costume party you attend to.

In this OneHowTo article we explain How to make a Rey costume from Star Wars in a few simple steps.

You'll need:
  • An old T-shirt and pair of pants or jumpsuit (white or beige color)
  • 1 Long piece of fabric (at least 13 yards)
  • 1-2 leather belt(s) and purse (brown)
  • 1 pair of leather boots (brown or black)
  • Brown or black paint (optional)
  • Plastic gun or laser (optional)
  • Brown and beige makeup palette
  • Scissors, glue and pins
Steps to follow:
1

To make a Rey costume you are going to need some materials that imitate all the elements that make up this headstrong character. We will be dividing the elements into dress, accessories and makeup.

2

To make the clothing attire you will need to choose a base. A white or beige shirt will work perfectly. Make sure it is an old shirt that you wouldn’t mind using for this DIY. Another option is finding an ankle length jumpsuit. You will be covering the base with the crosspiece.

3

To create the crosspiece you will need old curtains, a bed sheet or some cotton gauze fabric would be ideal. You are looking for light brown beige colors; however, if you can only find white you can buy some paint to color the fabric. The length of the fabric depends on the draping of the material. You want it to be tight around your body but loose enough so that it doesn’t impair range of movement.

Drape the fabric across your body in an X-shape that falls down your sides. This step allows you to be creative and drape the fabric in the way that best works for your body.

4

With regards to the pants, you can use longer pants for colder months or shorter pants if the weather is nice. Use old pants that you can spray paint on to create a desert and rough feel. The palette is beige, brown and white.

For the shoes you can use leather boots or ankle boots in brown or black color.

Some essential accessories are arm and leg wraps, belts and a backpack. You can also create a pair of goggles, a cowl to cover your head and even some fun add-ons such as Rey’s lightsaber or blaster pistol.

6

For the arm and leg wraps you can use leftover material from the crosspiece. Cut a long piece of fabric and wrap it around your arms just above elbow length for the arms and knee length for the legs. If you are wearing high boots you might not need leg wraps.

For the belt and waist pocket you can use an old brown small purse and attach it to your belt. Look for a leather belt that is at least 10 cm (4 inches) wide or that is long enough to wrap your waist several times. You can always paint the belt.

7

Finally, to recreate the makeup look go for a natural and bronze colored palette. You can create some personality by adding a strong brow and then apply some light brown eye shadow and bronzer on your cheeks. Finish the style by tying your hair up in a small bun.

From head to toe this is a simple and affordable Rey costume for any Star Wars fan. Be free to add more pieces or tweak the contents so that you can definitely rock this style. You can also learn how to make a Princess Leia costume too!
