How To Make a DIY Mario Costume

It doesn't matter if you were born in the 80s or the 90s, many of us have grown up with Mario and Luigi and have fond memories of crashing around in Mario Kart or keeping Princess Peach safe in the Mushroom Kingdom. These characters make the perfect DIY costume idea for Halloween, Carnival, or any occasion. Here at OneHowTo, we have put together a few ideas to help you make your own homemade Mario Bros costumes.

Steps to follow:
1

To make a DIY Mario Costume, and a Luigi Costume too if you have a friend to partner with, it's easier than you think. You should be able to pick up everything you need to make this homemade costume quite easily. You will need:

A set of blue overalls or dungarees - cotton or denim are both fine.

A red t-shirt (long or short sleeved)

A red cap

Yellow and white felt

White gloves (optional)

Black makeup pencil

Additionally, consider some brown shoes to complete the look. Mario is often depicted wearing sturdy brown boots, which add an authentic touch to your ensemble.

The first thing we need for our DIY Mario Costume is, of course, the classic blue overalls or dungarees, and it doesn't matter if they're made from cotton or denim. If you already have one or the other at home, then you're almost halfway there already! If not, then you should be able to find a plain blue overall in your local store.

Once you have this, all you need to do is simply cut the top part (removing the sleeves) so that it looks like the famous braces worn by Mario and his brother Luigi.

For the final touch, you will need to add the enormous yellow buttons. We recommend you use yellow felt to make them; all you need to do is cut two circles of the same size and sew them onto the overalls. It will only take a couple of minutes. To give your costume an even more realistic look, consider adding a small pocket to the overalls, which can serve as a handy place to store small items during your costume event.

Now you will need your red t-shirt - a long-sleeved one is better so that your costume resembles Mario as much as possible, but it's not essential.

Next, it's time to personalize your hat to add the finishing touch to your DIY Mario Costume. Some people might choose to make their own Mario hat from vinyl or foam, but the easiest way to create a Mario hat is simply to get a plain red cap and, using white felt, cut out an M shape and stick it on the hat. It's the quickest and easiest way to make your own DIY Mario Costume at the last minute!

If you want to add more detail, consider stitching the "M" onto the cap for a more durable finish. This will ensure your costume stands up to any adventure you embark on.

Now you have the overalls, the shirt, and the hat, you're just missing a mustache! If you're in a hurry, simply draw one on using a black makeup pencil. If your aim is to try and make the best homemade Mario costume you can, you could always go to a joke shop and buy a false one. Alternatively, craft one from black felt for a reusable option.

Your homemade Mario costume is sure to get everyone smiling at whatever party it is you are going to! If you want to make a Luigi costume, just follow the steps above but substitute the red items for green ones and change your felt "M" to an "L". And don't forget to save Princess Peach!

To enhance your appearance, consider adding some temporary facial hair dye to make your mustache look even more authentic.
