Most children - and even some adults - have a tendency to not be able to sleep on Christmas Eve. There is so much going on with family and friends, and the excitement of Santa Claus mean that some people suffer some of the worst insomnia of their lives. Try to Tire Yourself Out on Christmas Eve

You will probably have a lot to do on Christmas Eve morning, so wake up very early in order to accomplish it all. Doing all of your errands and by the time you are all finished, you will be exhausted. There will be no way that insomnia will kick in. You will be so tired that all you will want to do is sleep! If its the kids that can't sleep on Christmas Eve, try and think of a fun activity or game that will really tire them out meaning that they won't be able to keep their eyes open come nightfall. Here are some of the best games to play on Christmas Eve to tire yourself out:

Cherades

This is a classic game where you have to guess the name of a mysterious character that one of the players will have to imitate and mimic. You can also do books, films, plays etc... You just need to indicate what type of art or person you are trying to imitate. On Christmas Eve you can make it even more fun and use only Christmas themed films such as "The Grinch" or "Home Alone", books like "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens or the best Christmas Pantos such as "Cinderella".

Mr. and Mrs.

If there is a lot of you staying at your home, this is a great game to play and tire you out. This time you will have two teams, the men's team and the women's team. The aim is to fit three men on the sofa. Spread out some chairs by the sofa to create a full circle. Sit one man next to one woman, making sure the right seat of the sofa is empty. Now, write your name on a piece of paper. Fold it and put it in a bowl. Once all the names are in, you will each have to pick a name. From now on this will be your name and you will only respond to that name, but you cannot remind others what it is. The person sitting next to the empty seat will call out a name, for example "Helen". If this is your name, you will stand up from your seat and sit on the empty spot on the sofa. The rest will have to remember your name, especially if they are on the opposite side so they can get you off the sofa. The game ends when one team manages to fit three people on the sofa. No cheating allowed!

Christmas performance

Another way to tire out before going to bed on Christmas Eve is to put on a Christmas performance for your children. Ask them to dress up and put on a Christmas play, dance or carol singing performance. There's nothing like exercising both body and braid to sleep on Christmas Eve!

Another way to tire yourself out on Christmas Eve is to go outdoors, if the weather allows you to do so, and go for a long family walk, a run or even play some kind of family sport such as soccer, basketball or baseball. If it's cold or snowing, you can even go out sledding or ice skating! This is bound to tire you all out and allow you to sleep deeply.

Try Meditation and Relaxation

Meditation is a great way to fight off insomnia on any day of the year, and especially if you want to fall asleep on Christmas Eve. By doing some meditation about an hour before your bed time, you will be able to calm down any of your anxieties. When your mind is calm, you can be sure to have a good night's sleep. At oneHOWTO we want to give you some simple exercises you can practice so it's much easier to fall asleep on this special night:

  • Sit on your bed in the Lotus position (legs folded one over the other) and close your eyes. Breath in deeply and, when your lungs are filled, breathe out as much as you can. Now, open your mouth as if you were going to yawn, opening your jaw as wide as you can. This will alert your body that it is now time to go to bed.
  • When in bed, put on some relaxing music you can easily find on Youtube. Close your eyes and lie down on your back. Set your mind on the music, listed to it attentively and take deep breaths, longer and longer every time.
  • Use lavender essential oil by pouring just two drops on your pillow. Put a drop on your fingers and massage on your temples with eyes closed. This will help relax from all the excitement of Christmas Eve.

Drink Some Herbal Tea

There are quite a few teas and herbal infusions that are designed to encourage relaxation and sleep. A nice lavender or chamomile tea is bound to calm down your nerves and allow you to get a great sleep on Christmas Eve.

A nice cup of Valerian tea or lime blossom, while snuggling under a blanket and a roaring fire will help induce comfort, and therefore sleep too.

Take a Warm Bath

A warm bath is one of the best ways to soothe not only your body, but also your mind. A bath will relax your muscles and allow you to get a great sleep. If you want to really relax, try using a lavender or chamomile bath soap, essential oils or bubbles. You can also add some relaxing music to the mix if you like to boost the effect.
