Perhaps the most common Christmas gift exchange game is called Secret Santa. A few weeks before Christmas, each person participating will draw out a name from a basket. You are allowed to send some clues; but never reveal who you are buying a gift for until the day you all exchange gifts. This is a typical game to celebrate Christmas at the office.

White Elephant

White Elephant or Dirty Santa has slowly become a favorite gift exchange idea during the Christmas holidays. Each person will buy a gift for someone else in the group. Unlike Secret Santa you don’t know who is going to get your gift and you have to blindly buy a gift. Usually, groups set up a maximum price or indicate a theme to make the process easier. You may even decide to just gift out homemade presents.

There a few rules to follow so that you don’t miss out on the fun. On the day of the exchange, one by one, you will draw out a number from a basket. This indicates the order you will all go in. After you set up the gifts in the center, the person that got number one will choose a gift. Next, the person with the number two will choose a gift. This person can choose to either keep the gift or steal a gift that has already been selected. Once you get to the last person, the person with the number one can have a turn at stealing a gift. It is said that picking number one or number ten places you at an advantage.

Musical gift

If your family or friends enjoy listening to Christmas carols you will perhaps enjoying playing this game. You will all sit in a circle and one of you will select a gift. Then, you will play a song and start passing along the gift until the song stops. The person who has the gift when the song stops will get to keep the gift.

Unwrapping gift game

Very similar to musical gifts, this Christmas gift exchange idea will have you bouncing up and down in excitement. You will sit around in a circle and you will take turns to unwrap a gift. The key element is to wrap a gift in as many layers as possible. When one person unwraps the gift, if there is another layer of wrapping paper underneath, the gift must be passed along to the next person. The person who removes the last layer of wrapping paper will get to keep the gift.
